New title regulations per 1 January 2023
As of 1 July 2022, article 1.5.6 of the FIDE Title Regulations has been effective. This article states that any title application after this date will need to include a ‘qualifying’ Swiss System norm. This article has been introduced to reduce the emphasis on Round Robin tournaments.
In the 4th FIDE Council 2022 this article has been updated with a series of other tournaments:
- The Chess Olympiad
- Tournaments organised under the aegis of GSC that establish direct qualifiers to the FIDE Candidates Tournament
- Tournaments that establish direct qualifiers to the FIDE World Cup
- Individual Tournaments held under the aegis of EVE (Article 1, General Regulations for FIDE Competitions)
- Final Stage of the National Individual Championship
The tournaments listed above include the Men’s (or Open) section and the Women’s section.

Furthermore, several corrections have been made to improve the wording of the FIDE Title Regulations, including changes related to the use of gender pronouns.
